First Steps is a class designed to help 1st-5th graders learn about the purpose and importance of salvation and baptism. Kids must complete this class prior to being baptizedat The Pursuit Church. Parents are encouraged to attend this class with their child. Baptisms are usually held on the third Sunday of each month in the main worship center during the Sunday service. Dates of the next baptism will be discussed at the class.
WHAT IS BAPTISM?
New Testament baptism is a believer’s baptism to those who profess a personal saving faith in Christ. The symbolic meaning of baptism is that of a believer’s union with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ the Lord. (Colossians 2:12)
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
The New Testament suggests that those who have repented of sin and receive the gracious gift of God’s salvation in Christ should be baptized. (Acts 2:41, 8:12 & 10:44-46)
WHY SHOULD A BELIEVER BE BAPTIZED?
Because Jesus commanded baptism (Matthew 28:19), as did the apostles (Acts 2:38), and because it publicly demonstrates one is a follower of Jesus Christ.
WHAT DOES BAPTISM ILLUSTRATE?
Christ’s burial and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) as well as a believer’s new life as a Christian. (2 Corinthians 5:17 and Romans 6:4)
HOW IS BAPTISM PERFORMED?
Those who were baptized in the New Testament were immersed, or put under water and raised again. Mark 1:5 says people were baptized “in the Jordan River.” Mark 1:10 says, “As Jesus came up out of the water.” At The Pursuit Church, we follow this biblical example and baptize in a public ceremony in the baptismal pool during our worship service.
HOW OLD SHOULD CHILDREN BE BEFORE THEY ARE BAPTIZED?
We believe that the child should have a clear understanding of what baptism is, and why it is important. Because of this, we suggest children be at least 2nd grade and be able to articulate their testimony of when they became a believer in Jesus Christ. Parents should also support the child’s decision to follow Christ.
